We live in a world that has progressed rapidly in just 150 years.  Our food has fundamentally changed.  It has been industrialized, sprayed with pesticides, and processed in ways like never before.  It is also being genetically modified to contain toxins that our bodies simply don’t recognize as food.

In addition to the changes in our food there has also been many changes in our environment.  When most people think of environmental stressors they think of chemicals, mold, mildew, heavy metals, and maybe even nuclear radiation.  These are all self evident because a person  can see, smell, or taste many of these things.  It is very important to avoid these things or reduce exposure to lower the burden on your body.

Invisible radiation can be deceptive

Probably the most deceptive environmental bodily stressor of all is low-level man-made radiation.  There are extremely low frequency (ELF) ranges that create electric and magnetic fields.  There are also higher frequency radio and microwave radiation from radio, TV broadcasting, mobile phones, mobile phone towers, Wi-Fi, baby monitors, smart meters, bluetooth, and other wireless technologies.

Radiation exposure to the body has increased astronomically in the last 100 years

Radiation exposure to the body has increased astronomically in the last 100 years

Scientists estimate that humans get 30 to 100 million times the amount of electromagnetic radiation than just 100 years ago.  Much like modern processed foods suddenly appearing in human history, these frequencies were rapidly introduced to humankind as the invention of electricity gradually expanded and more and more people were exposed to this new type of low level radiation.  The higher frequencies were not prominent much at all until the invention of radios, TV broadcasting, and now mobile phone and other wireless technologies.  Our exposure throughout history DEFINITELY has not been anywhere near the levels that we are exposed to today.

There are many studies that show the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation.  One of the most detrimental biological effects is the way that this type of radiation disrupts proper functioning of melatonin in the human body.  Frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum have been shown to physiologically distort signals to the hypothalamus and pituitary, both of which depend on light frequencies to get information about the environment.  This information is used to send proper instructions to various hormone producing glands.

Electronic pollution in our environment is constantly being pumped out and creating an environment where our bodies may "think" that the sun is still out when it is dark.

Light is a key player in this equation and part of the environment that the hypothalamus monitors. Light is also a part of the electromagnetic spectrum and plays a crucial role in the balance between cortisol and melatonin.  Cortisol is activated by the presence of light along with circadian clock signals that depend on melatonin secretion the night before.  When cortisol is high enough during sleep it causes a person to wake up.

Melatonin is produced when the sun goes down and there is an absence of light.  Many studies suggest that light and other electromagnetic frequencies stimulate the hypothalamus in a similar way that light does.  If this is true then the implication is that all of this electronic pollution in our airways is constantly being pumped out and creating an environment where our bodies may “think” that the sun is still out when it is dark.  Reducing both artificial light and electromagnetic radiation at night can be immensely helpful in optimizing the proper signaling of the hypothalamus and pituitary glands that in turn ensures a timely secretion of melatonin from the pineal gland before bedtime.

What does melatonin do exactly?

The brain only detoxes like described during sleep. This is why a person cannot go long without sleep and why sleep is vitally important for healing any condition.

Melatonin

If a person continually takes melatonin he or she is effectively telling the hypothalamus that the pineal gland IS producing enough melatonin and so the body halts or slows its natural production.

Why not supplement with melatonin?

There are several reasons to think twice before supplementing with melatonin.  Most oral melatonin comes in a peptide form that does not cross the blood brain barrier.  It can be beneficial for the rest of the body as an antioxidant but wouldn’t help the brain as effectively.

If oral melatonin does work for a person and it seems to aid in sleep, it could be a sign of a compromised blood brain barrier, probably due to excess electromagnetic radiation or artificial light exposure at night.

Liposomal melatonin is nanonized and thus small enough that it DOES cross the blood brain barrier.  In some cases a healthcare practitioner may like to use this form of melatonin temporarily to give a boost to detoxing the brain but you have to be careful about supplementing with a hormone over a long period of time.

Every hormone has a negative feedback loop sending information back to the hypothalamus about hormone activity in the body.  The hypothalamus uses this information to tell the pituitary gland how much of each hormone needs to be produced based on the current body readings and environmental information from the hypothalamus.  If a person continually takes melatonin he or she is effectively telling the hypothalamus that the pineal gland IS producing enough melatonin and so the body halts or slows its natural production.  As Geovital likes to emphasize, we are in the business of providing solutions, not covering up symptoms.

Supplements Don’t Replace EMF Radiation Shielding

emphasis should be put on the point that supplementing does not REPLACE EMF radiation shielding.

emphasis should be put on the point that supplementing does not REPLACE EMF radiation shielding.

Keeping the root cause in mind, emphasis should be put on the point that supplementing does not REPLACE EMF radiation shielding. Shielding actually REMOVES the electromagnetic radiation stressor.  Supplementation allows your body to more easily manage stress.  You could say the nutrients help with damage control.  The difference could be compared to trying to stay dry in the rain. Shielding is like an umbrella or poncho being used to keep the rain off your clothes and body. Supplementation would be more like carrying a towel around wiping the water off as you get wet.  A towel may help, but it is not a long-term solution.  If you are in the rain for a long-time the towel continually gets wet and becomes less effective the longer you are exposed.  If  there is an immense downpour of rain the towel again becomes ineffective very quickly.

It’s the same way with supplementation for radiation versus shielding against the radiation.  The body can only repair damage so fast, whereas shielding drastically reduces or stops the damage from happening altogether.  Blocking the radiation allows the body to do much DEEPER healing at night when the glymphatic system is activated during sleep.  If there are stressors infiltrating your sleeping location it can raise cortisol, disrupt your sleep, and impede the amount of melatonin that is being released and used to help wipe away toxins via the glymphatic system.

What Supplements or Nutrients Can Be Helpful during exposure to EMF radiation?

There ARE some nutrients that have been shown to be effective for handling electromagnetic radiation by supporting systems that are disrupted by them.

Tinctures and Herbs

Propolis.* One of the most intriguing substances to supplement with is propolis: a sticky resin made by bees.  It is especially interesting because bees absolutely can’t stand man made radiation.  Maybe they use this as protection for themselves?  Might be far fetched, but they do make this resin to fortify and seal their hives.  Propolis is highly antibacterial, antifungal, and even antiviral.  The very best kind of propolis is Brazilian Green Propolis extract.
The available studies on propolis focus on a particular makeup of propolis (also known as CAPE, caffeic acid phenethyl ester).  CAPE crosses the blood brain barrier and has a melatonin-like effect on the brain and bodily tissues. (research on CAPE and mobile phone-induced renal impairment)
*Do note that if you are allergic to bees or honey, you should ask your healthcare provider if propolis could be a problem for you.

Rosemary extract is a potent antioxidant that is especially helpful before bed.  Dr Klinghardt, a holistic medical doctor in Seattle who I’ve spend some time with, uses rosemary extract in his practice for children with autism and he has found that it helps those children to calm down, get restful sleep, and aids in dealing with the daily electromagnetic radiation burden on the body and brain.

Curcumin/turmeric, ginger, and black pepper can be combined into a synergistic blend.  This combination is anti-inflammatory, full of antioxidants, and are best used together for increased absorption.  There are many products out there that are incorporating these three spices together in capsule form.  It is best not to take this at night because it can be stimulating.  It is best used during the day between or during meals.  In fact, these spices can often be bought in bulk at the grocery store and used on your food.

L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that is a precursor to melatonin. To digest any amino acid you must have proper hydrochloric acid in the stomach and proper enzyme secretion to properly break down the tryptophan so that it is bioavailable for producing melatonin.  If you aren’t digesting your amino acids well because of low stomach acid then you won’t have the resources available to make adequate amounts of melatonin.  Tryptophan can be found in turkey.  This is why you might be sleepy after that Thanksgiving meal. You can also get it in a supplement form called 5-HTP.  It has a calming anti-anxiety effect.

Minerals

Minerals can also be very helpful in supporting you during EMF radiation exposure.

Zinc has been shown in studies to help mitigate the negative effects of electric and magnetic radiation induced lipid oxidation in the brains of rats. A full spectrum of minerals are important to help mitigate stress response from electromagnetic exposure because those resources are used up when cells are under stress.  Trace minerals are best acquired from a pure sea salt or Himalayan salt.

Magnesium, potassium, and calcium are incredibly important for cellular metabolic processes and stress responses.   Most people get enough calcium in their diet so if you work on digesion you should begin to absorb more calcium.  Magnesium deficiencies are rampant all over the world.  The best way to raise your magnesium levels is a combination of a magnesium gel or oil on the skin each day (I recommend rubbing it over the kidneys), epsom salt baths, and oral magnesium supplementation with a magnesium orotate or glycinate.  Potassium can be helpful when supplemented as well but should be monitored by a healthcare practitioner and not taken long-term.

Selenium and iodine are synergistic for the thyroid gland and are also potent antioxidants.  Iodine is famously used for protecting against radioactive radiation but it also has a protective effect on cells exposed to electromagnetic radiation.

Any antioxidant protection you can add in will aid melatonin in its job of mopping up free radicals that are created from electromagnetic stress during the day.  They also can aid in the absorption of minerals.

Additional antioxidants that can be used include Vitamin C (good sources would be rose hips tea, pineapple, papaya, organic oranges, limes, lemons, other citrus fruits), Vitamin E (sprouted sunflower seeds, sprouted almonds, spinach, avocado) (Research on Vitamin C and E protective function during radiofrequency exposur) , glutathione (transdermal cream by Apex Energetics, Oxicell or liposomal glutathione) (Research on liver antioxidant stores protecting the brain from electromagnetic radiation-induced oxidative stress during pregnancy and the development of offspring), or astaxanthin (wild caught salmon, krill oil, shrimp).

Food, Digestion and Nutrients – All lost if not Bioavailable!

All macronutrients and micronutrients that the body needs to deal with stressors can only be used when they are bioavailable.

All macronutrients and micronutrients that the body needs to deal with stressors can only be used when they are bioavailable.  A person could eat a pristine organic, free range, biodynamic nutrient dense whole food diet, but if he or she is not digesting it then it does no good.

In this scenario, the food goes through your digestive tract but your body does not utilize the nutrients.  You’ve just spent a significant amount of money on this wonderfully healthy food and you aren’t even digesting it!  You must optimize digestion to get a good bang for your buck.  I recommend working with a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, or another qualified practitioner on this so your body can use the nutrients it receives from both food and supplements.

Conclusions

There are many other nutrients and foods that CAN work for you during EMF radiation exposure.  In my opinion, it is best when starting any new supplement protocol to have each supplement tested for compatibility with organ specific kinesiology testing or using a process called lingual neuro testing and reflex points to make sure that the supplement is appropriate and will work for your specific bioindividuality.

‘In my opinion, it is best when starting any new supplement protocol to have each supplement tested for compatibility with organ specific kinesiology testing or using a process called lingual neuro testing and reflex points.’

Sometimes protocols or supplements work for one person but won’t work for another because of a sensitivity, allergen, or the simple fact that the person is already sufficient. I’ve found this very important in my practice to help my clients not waste money on supplements that do not work for them specifically or could actually do harm if it causes further imbalances.

Again, these nutrients covered are a great way to support your body when exposed to unavoidable EMR during the day and they can be supportive for nighttime exposure as well.  They do NOT REPLACE radiation protection or shielding but they can be supportive to an individual who is exposed to radiation on a day to day basis.

If you would like to lay the foundation for healing and maximize your chances of health recovery or optimization, you must take steps to address these various types of low-level man-made radiation, especially in the bedroom.  You can do this through shielding or eliminating the sources of radiation.  When you take that step, it enables your body to utilize the incredible healing systems that is has in place to restore energy and sweep toxins/stress byproducts away.  These systems are only activated on a deep level when environmental stressors like radiation are not present.

I hope these tips on nutrition were helpful.  If my colleagues or I are able to assist you with your home and health, we would be happy to hear from you!

Wishing you extraordinary health and happiness!
